Birth Doula

What is a Birth Doula?

A Doula is a trained professional who provides on going physical, emotional, and informational support to a laboring person before, during and directly after childbirth. A Birth Doula's goal is to help you achieve a healthy and satisfying labor and delivery.

Why ongoing support during labor is beneficial?

In a 2012 study, Hodnett et al. published an updated Cochrane review of the use of continuous support for women during childbirth. The results of 22 trials that included 15,000 women revealed that overall, women who received continuous support were:

More likely to have spontaneous vaginal births.

Less likely to have pain medication.

Less likely to have negative feelings about childbirth.

Less likely to have vacuum or forceps-assisted births.

Less likely to have C-sections.

Labors shorter by roughly 40 minutes.

Higher APGAR scores.

Having a Birth Doula results in:

31% decrease in the use of pitocin.

28% decrease in C-section.

12% increase in the likelihood of a spontaneous vaginal birth.

9% decrease in the use of ANY medication for pain.

14% decrease of newborns being admitted to a special care nursery.

66%  increase in being satisfied with the birth experience.
